Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony was first performed in Vienna, at the Theater an der Wien, on 22 December 1808, in a long concert that also premiered his Sixth Symphony. Its first movement opens with four notes, three short and one long, and builds almost everything from them; it has become one of the most famous openings in all music.
