« Libiamo ne’ lieti calici » is the drinking song from the first act of La Traviata, the opera Giuseppe Verdi first staged at La Fenice in Venice on 6 March 1853, to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils. At a party in Violetta’s Paris salon, Alfredo raises his glass and sings the first verse; Violetta answers with the second, and the whole company joins in.
