The can-can tune is the « Infernal Galop » from Orpheus in the Underworld, the operetta Jacques Offenbach first staged in Paris in October 1858. In the underworld, the gods of Olympus dance it wildly at the end of the second act; the dancers of the Paris music halls then made it the music of the can-can.
